Fungi and mold naturally occur in our daily environment. In fact, over 1,000 kinds of fungi have been identified. Here at SERVPRO, we deal with water damage every day and know the proper actions to prevent mold growth. If you spot mold in your home or business make sure you know the difference between the myths and facts about mold.
- ‘Toxic’ Mold is the only dangerous types of molds: “Toxic’ mold or “black” mold is often referred to being the most dangerous to your health. “Black mold”, known as stachybotrys chartarum develops very slowly and usually follows earlier mold growths. There are more than 100,000 types of molds and only 50 to 60 are actually potentially hazardous to humans.
- If you can’t see it or smell it mold is not a problem: Mold can grow in isolated areas like between floors and ceilings. Not only can you not see the mold, if it’s cut off from air flow, you are unlikely to smell it.
- Bleach kills mold: Due to the chemicals in bleach, putting bleach on mold may appear to get rid of it, but the affects is superficial and temporary. There are many chemicals that can kill mold called biocides. Take warning that anything that kills mold is harmful to both you and your pets. While that little mildew in your shower can be treated with bleach, anything else will likely need professional help.
