In honor of Fire Prevention week, SERVPRO of East Kalamazoo wants to make sure that you know the difference between a smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarms. You should have both in your home to keep your family safe in case of a fire. If you currently have both in your home make sure you replace your batteries at least once a year and if you don’t, make sure you know the difference between the two.
SMOKE ALARM
A smoke alarm can sense smoke before you can, alerting you to danger. In the event of a fire, you might have as little as two minutes to escape safely. This is the reason it is very important to have one in every bedroom, outside of sleeping areas, and on each level on the home, including the basement. It is advised to not have a smoke alarm in your kitchen or bathrooms.
CARBON MONOXIDE ALARM
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas that displaces you unconscious before you even realize something is wrong. Without vital oxygen, you are at risk of death from carbon monoxide poisoning in a short time. CO alarms detect the presence of carbon monoxide and alert you so you call get out, call 9-1-1 and let the professionals check your home.
