In 432 A.D. St. Patrick aged about 16 was captured by Irish pirates (he was technically a Roman citizen at the time in Great Britain) and taken as a slave to Ireland.
In 1601, the first "unofficial" St. Patrick's Day parade took place in the Spanish colony that is now St. Augustine, Florida.
In 1756, the first official St. Patrick's Day was celebrated in New York City at the Crown and Thistle Tavern.
In 1762, the first St. Patrick's Day parade is celebrated in New York City.
More than 100 St. Patrick's Day parades are held across the United States of America, with New York City and Boston the home of the largest celebrations. No surprise there with so much Irish immigration history!
